One of the greatest joys in my life is spending time with my fabulous grandchildren.
Watching them grow and develop is eternally fascinating. I love the way they make sense of the world through play and creativity. We spend endless hours making up games, playing shops, cooking and getting the art box out – and I love it!
I also love our chats, those precious moments when we sit down, cuddle up to each other and discuss some of the big issues like who’s your favourite Disney character or why does Grandad make funny faces all the time (he doesn’t, that’s just his face!).
Of course to my grandchildren, I am the font of all knowledge – I am “Google Granny”. Rarely does a moment go by when I don’t hear the word “why” at the beginning of a sentence – why is the sea blue granny? Why can’t I eat Haribo for breakfast?
As adults, we often stop asking questions for fear of looking stupid but I, just like my grandchildren, never lose the desire to find out more – as the American novelist Thomas Berger once said, “The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge.”
It occurred to me the other day that every one of them would make great hairdressers. We spend a lot of time asking questions of our guests to ensure they get the very best results.
In conclusion, I will never tire of hearing or saying the word “why?” as the answers always bring us wisdom.
